Heavy lifting and good friends

Carmen called this morning asking if I could help her mom move some furniture around her apartment. Apparently Mrs. Rodriguez decided the day after Christmas was the perfect time to rearrange her entire living room. Who am I to argue with that logic?

Heavy lifting and good friends

*Heavy lifting and good friends*

Turns out "moving some furniture" meant relocating a dresser that weighs approximately as much as a small car. Carmen and I spent twenty minutes just figuring out how to get it through the doorway without taking out the wall. Her mom kept offering us more coffee like caffeine was going to magically make this thing lighter.

Assembly line packing mode activated.

*Assembly line packing mode activated.*

The packing went smoother once we got into a rhythm. Carmen's got this system where she calls out what goes in each box and I just follow orders. Probably the most organized I've been all week. Mrs. Rodriguez kept thanking us like we were doing some huge favor, but honestly it felt good to be useful for something that didn't involve memorizing bone structures or writing blog posts about my feelings.

Stage fright and spotlights

Carmen dragged me to Murphy's tonight and before I could chicken out, she had signed us up for karaoke. My hands were literally shaking when they called our names.

Stage fright and spotlights

*Stage fright and spotlights*

This is me having what can only be described as an out-of-body experience while Carmen belts out "Since U Been Gone" like she was born for this moment.

I've always been the person who says "maybe next time" when someone suggests karaoke. Too embarrassing, too public, too many ways to mess up. But something about the way Carmen looked at me when she asked made me just nod before my brain could interfere. Next thing I knew, I was on that tiny stage holding a microphone and trying not to trip over the cord.

We absolutely butchered Kelly Clarkson, but the three people clapping at the end seemed genuinely entertained by our disaster.

Victory walk after surviving my karaoke debut

*Victory walk after surviving my karaoke debut*

Walking back to our table felt like some kind of victory lap, even though my voice is completely shot now. Carmen keeps saying we're doing this again next week, and the scary part is I might actually say yes.

Method to the madness

Three weeks of banging my head against this anatomy textbook and tonight something finally clicked.

Method to the madness

*Method to the madness*

I've been trying to memorize everything word-for-word like I did in high school, but Dr. Peterson keeps saying we need to understand the connections, not just the labels.

So instead of just highlighting and re-reading for the millionth time, I started drawing everything out and writing my own explanations in the margins. Turns out when you actually think about why the cardiac cycle works the way it does instead of just trying to memorize the phases, it actually makes sense. Who knew?

Three hours of rewriting notes and it finally clicked.

*Three hours of rewriting notes and it finally clicked.*

My desk looks like a tornado hit it but I finally get why the left ventricle has thicker walls than the right - it's not just some random fact to memorize, it's because it has to pump blood to your whole body instead of just your lungs. Carmen's going to think I've lost it when she sees me excited about heart chambers, but I don't even care.

Maybe I'm not hopeless at this nursing thing after all. Just had to figure out how to study like a college student instead of cramming like I'm still in high school.

Thanksgiving breakthrough

Had dinner with my parents tonight and something shifted. Dad asked me about my anatomy class struggles and instead of launching into his usual "maybe you should consider business" speech, he actually listened when I explained why nursing feels right.

Thanksgiving breakthrough

*Thanksgiving breakthrough*

Mom chimed in with this story about how her friend's daughter just graduated from nursing school and loves working in the NICU. Like, she was genuinely excited telling me about it. Six months ago they were both worried I was throwing away my "potential" by not going pre-med.

It's weird how much their support means to me. I didn't realize how much I'd been bracing myself for their disapproval until I didn't have to anymore.

Processing everything over leftover pie.

*Processing everything over leftover pie.*

Carmen's been telling me for weeks that they'd come around, but I guess I needed to hear it for myself.

Now I just have to actually pass that anatomy exam next week. No pressure or anything.

Death by fake vampire fangs

Carmen found me this afternoon looking like I'd been hit by a truck driven by the Grim Reaper himself. Last night's Halloween party at Phi Chi was... intense. I'm talking three-hour line for the bathroom, someone's little brother throwing up in a pumpkin, and me losing one of my vampire fangs somewhere on the dance floor around 1am.

Death by fake vampire fangs

*Death by fake vampire fangs*

The worst part? I spent forty-five minutes crawling around that disgusting frat house floor looking for a two-dollar plastic fang while Carmen held my purse and tried not to laugh. Found it stuck to someone's shoe. Gross doesn't even begin to cover it.

At least someone finds this funny

*At least someone finds this funny*

Carmen's been playing nurse all afternoon, bringing me water and pretzels while I dramatically recount every mortifying detail. She keeps reminding me that I volunteered to be designated driver next time, which honestly sounds amazing right now. Give me a Diet Coke and responsibility over whatever that punch was supposed to be.

Note to self: vampire costumes are only sexy in movies. In real life, you just end up with fake blood stains on your favorite white tank top and a lisp that makes ordering pizza impossible.

Vertical learning curve

Carmen dragged me to Triangle Rock Club this afternoon with zero warning. Just showed up at my door with climbing shoes in two different sizes and announced we were trying something new. I've been avoiding anything that might mess with my running training, but she had that look in her eyes that means resistance is futile.

Vertical learning curve

*Vertical learning curve*

Turns out rock climbing is nothing like what I expected. I thought it would be all upper body strength, but it's more like a puzzle you solve with your whole body. Carmen made it look effortless on her first route while I clung to the wall like a very determined starfish. The guy belaying me kept shouting encouragement that mostly sounded like "you're not gonna die, probably!"

My forearms are absolutely destroyed and I have chalk under my fingernails, but I'm already googling gym membership prices.

Post-climb hand inspection - we're both going to be sore tomorrow

*Post-climb hand inspection - we're both going to be sore tomorrow*

Carmen says this is what happens to everyone after their first time - you either never come back or you become completely obsessed. Based on how my brain is already strategizing different routes, I think I know which category I'm falling into.

Who knew being terrified fifteen feet off the ground could be this addictive? My anatomy textbook is gonna have to wait until I can actually grip a pen again.

Green thumbs and dirty fingernails

Carmen showed up this afternoon with a bag full of tiny succulents and declared we were having a "plant intervention" in my room. Apparently my one dying fern wasn't cutting it anymore and I needed some "low-maintenance green friends" to brighten up the dorm.

Green thumbs and dirty fingernails

*Green thumbs and dirty fingernails*

Turns out repotting plants is way messier than it looks in magazines. We spread newspaper all over my floor and Carmen basically became a plant whisperer, explaining which ones needed more drainage and how often to water each type. I mostly just tried not to kill anything while she did the actual work.

Two hours later we had six perfectly potted succulents lined up on my windowsill.

Our little plant family

*Our little plant family*

Carmen says they're foolproof but knowing me, I'll probably find a way to mess this up too. At least they're cute while they last.

Now I just need to remember to water them but not too much, give them light but not too much, and basically be the opposite of my usual plant-killing self. Wish me luck.

Mission partially accomplished

Three weeks of strategically timing my coffee runs to coincide with Jake's study sessions and today I finally did it. Actually walked up to his table and asked about the chem lab assignment instead of just staring at him from across the room like a total creep.

Mission partially accomplished

*Mission partially accomplished*

He was actually really nice about explaining the molecular structure stuff I've been struggling with, and when I said thanks he was like "no problem, maybe we can study together sometime." MAYBE WE CAN STUDY TOGETHER SOMETIME. I'm pretty sure I managed to say "yeah that sounds great" without my voice cracking but honestly I blacked out a little.

Now I'm sitting here pretending to review my notes but really just replaying every word of our five-minute conversation.

Attempting to study but mostly replaying our conversation

*Attempting to study but mostly replaying our conversation*

Carmen's gonna die when I tell her - she's been listening to me analyze this guy's coffee order for weeks like it holds the secrets to his soul or something.

Okay for real though I need to actually study now because if I bomb this next quiz I'll never live it down. But first let me just text Carmen real quick...

Operation perfect study selfie = epic fail

Spent twenty minutes trying to take one decent photo of myself studying because Matt from my sociology class asked how my Tuesday was going and obviously I need photographic evidence that I'm both studious AND effortlessly cute.

Operation perfect study selfie = epic fail

*Operation perfect study selfie = epic fail*

This is attempt number three and my flash is still making me look like I haven't seen sunlight since freshman orientation.

The worst part? I actually AM studying - have this huge anatomy quiz tomorrow and these muscle diagrams aren't going to memorize themselves. But do I send him a boring text about sartorius attachments? No, because I'm apparently fifteen years old and think boys care about carefully composed study selfies.

The face you make when the camera flash makes you look like a ghost

*The face you make when the camera flash makes you look like a ghost*

Meanwhile my phone keeps buzzing with actual text messages and I'm over here playing photographer in my own dorm room like some kind of MySpace refugee. Maybe I should just tell him I'm drowning in textbooks like a normal human being. Revolutionary concept, I know.

Breakthrough at 12:47am

Finally cracked the code on this stupid anatomy chapter that's been making me want to throw my textbook across the room for three days straight.

Breakthrough at 12:47am

*Breakthrough at 12:47am*

I don't know what clicked, but suddenly all those muscle groups started making sense instead of looking like random Latin words someone threw at a wall.

Turns out Carmen was right when she said I needed to stop trying to memorize everything at once and actually understand how the systems work together. Who knew? (Everyone except me, apparently.) I've been highlighting like a crazy person but now the colors actually mean something instead of just making the pages look like a rainbow threw up on them.

Finally getting somewhere with these muscle groups

*Finally getting somewhere with these muscle groups*

Three cups of coffee and four hours later, I actually feel like I might survive this prerequisites thing after all. My calc grade is still questionable and don't even get me started on chemistry lab, but at least anatomy isn't the complete disaster I thought it was going to be. Maybe I'm not completely out of my league here.

Now if I can just figure out how to get more than four hours of sleep and still maintain this momentum, I might actually make it to nursing school without having a complete breakdown first. Baby steps, right?

Finding my voice at the dinner table

Tonight's family dinner took an unexpected turn when my dad asked how I'm really feeling about starting nursing prerequisites next week. Instead of my usual vague 'fine' response, I actually opened up about why this path feels right for me.

Finding my voice at the dinner table

*Finding my voice at the dinner table*

I told them how different nursing feels from the pre-med track I was forcing myself down. How I want to be hands-on with patients, not stuck behind a desk. How I've been watching the nurses during my volunteer shifts and thinking 'that's what I want to do.' My mom got this look on her face like she was seeing me clearly for the first time in months.

The best part? My dad said he's proud of me for figuring out what I actually want instead of just following expectations. Coming from the man who's been talking about 'Dr. Elena' since I was twelve, that meant everything. [IMAGE_2]

Feels good to have my family really understand where I'm headed for once. Now I just need to survive anatomy class without changing my mind again!

Real people read this thing?

Just spent the last hour going through comments on my fitness posts and I'm kind of blown away. Like, there are actual people reading this random blog I started to keep myself accountable with workouts, and they're leaving real feedback!

Real people read this thing?

*Real people read this thing?*

This girl Sarah left this super thoughtful comment on my post about starting the 5K training with Carmen, talking about how she's been wanting to start running too but keeps making excuses. She said reading about our competitive disaster of a first workout made her realize that everyone starts somewhere messy. I don't know why but that hit me differently than I expected.

Actually reading real comments from real people!

*Actually reading real comments from real people!*

I ended up writing her back this long response about how terrified I was the first time Carmen dragged me to the rec center, and now I'm sitting here thinking maybe I should actually take this blog thing more seriously. Not in a weird influencer way or anything, but just... consistently showing up and being honest about the process?

Carmen's been telling me I should post more regularly anyway. Maybe having actual readers who care about this stuff is the push I needed to stop treating it like a random diary and start treating it like, well, something people might actually want to follow along with.

Training day one: reality bites

Carmen showed up at my dorm at 6:30am with a printed training schedule and this look in her eyes that said 'I'm about to destroy you.' She wasn't kidding.

Training day one: reality bites

*Training day one: reality bites*

Apparently there's a difference between 'I run sometimes' and 'I'm training for a 5K race.' The difference is intervals. And pain. So much pain. Carmen kept calling out these times and distances like she was some kind of drill sergeant while I just tried not to die on the campus trail.

But here's the weird thing - I actually loved it? Like, my lungs were burning and my legs felt like jello, but there was something about having an actual plan and pushing myself harder than I ever do alone.

Post-run stretches with my training partner

*Post-run stretches with my training partner*

Carmen says we're doing this three times a week until the race in September. My body is already protesting but my competitive side is totally here for it.

Definitely updating the blog with our progress. If I'm gonna suffer through this training, at least I can document it for posterity (and maybe inspire someone else to torture themselves too).

Reality check in room 247

Seventeen hours into my first nursing prerequisite textbook and I'm officially questioning everything.

Reality check in room 247

*Reality check in room 247*

Like, I knew anatomy would be challenging, but memorizing every single bone, muscle, and nerve? My brain feels like it's going to leak out my ears.

Started with medical terminology this morning thinking it would be the easy warm-up class. Wrong. Apparently there's a whole different language I need to learn before I can even think about patient care. Carmen stopped by while I was drowning in flashcards

Deep in anatomy notes - bone names are harder than I thought

*Deep in anatomy notes - bone names are harder than I thought*

and just laughed at the chaos on my desk. Easy for her to say - she's not the one trying to pronounce 'sternocleidomastoid' without sounding like she's having a stroke.

The weird thing is, even though my head is spinning, I'm actually excited? Like, this feels real in a way pre-med never did. These aren't just abstract concepts I need to memorize for a test - this is stuff I'll actually use to help people. Still terrifying, but the good kind of terrifying.

Back to the books. If anyone needs me, I'll be the girl muttering bone names under her breath in the library.

Heavy lifting and friendship

Carmen called at 9am asking if I could help her move the last of her stuff to her new place near campus. Obviously I said yes because that's what friends do, right? Plus she promised pizza after.

Heavy lifting and friendship

*Heavy lifting and friendship*

Turns out "a few boxes" meant approximately seventeen thousand pounds of kitchen supplies and textbooks. I'm pretty sure that box of nursing books weighs more than I do. But honestly, it felt good to do something useful with my Saturday instead of just lying around feeling guilty about not studying.

Taking a breather between trips

*Taking a breather between trips*

Carmen kept apologizing for asking me to help, but I reminded her that she literally saved my butt with those pharmacy calculations last week. Friends help friends, especially when pizza is involved. My back might disagree tomorrow, but my conscience feels pretty good right now.

Now if someone could explain to me why she owns seventeen different measuring cups, that would be great.

Math breakthrough (finally!)

Carmen convinced me to tackle pharmacy calculations today instead of putting them off until August like I was planning. Thank GOD she did because I was about to have a complete meltdown trying to figure out milligrams per kilogram conversions on my own.

Math breakthrough (finally!)

*Math breakthrough (finally!)*

We claimed a corner table at the Blue Cup around noon and I swear we went through three refills each before either of us could get through a single practice problem without wanting to throw the textbook across the room. Carmen kept making these dramatic sighing noises every time she had to start over, and I was basically ready to switch majors again.

But then something clicked! Carmen figured out this trick for setting up the equations and suddenly it all made sense.

Two heads are definitely better than one when it comes to drug calculations

*Two heads are definitely better than one when it comes to drug calculations*

We spent the next two hours flying through problems like we actually knew what we were doing. I can't believe I was so scared of the math part - turns out I just needed someone to explain it who wasn't a textbook.

Seriously considering making this our regular Tuesday thing. Carmen's way better at keeping me focused than studying alone in my room where I just end up reorganizing my desk drawers instead of actually learning anything useful.

Competitive streak activated

Three weeks of working out with Carmen and I've officially become one of those people who tracks every single rep.

Competitive streak activated

*Competitive streak activated*

Remember when I used to just show up to the rec center and wing it? Those days are SO over. Carmen keeps a detailed workout log and times her rest periods with a stopwatch, so naturally I had to step up my game.

Now I'm writing down everything - how much weight, how many sets, even notes about form improvements.

Progress tracking level: obsessed

*Progress tracking level: obsessed*

It's actually kind of addictive seeing the numbers go up week by week. Last Monday I deadlifted my bodyweight for the first time ever, and Carmen cheered so loud the entire weight room turned to stare.

The weird part is how much stronger I feel, not just physically but mentally too. Having someone push you past what you think you can do is pretty amazing. We've got leg day planned for tomorrow and I'm actually looking forward to it, which is definitely not something I would have said a month ago.

Unexpected workout buddy

Carmen and I just finished destroying ourselves at the rec center (her idea of a "light cardio day" nearly killed me) when this little orange furball came trotting up to us outside.

Unexpected workout buddy

*Unexpected workout buddy*

At first I thought it was just another campus cat doing its own thing, but this little guy was clearly looking for some attention.

Carmen immediately melted. I mean MELTED. She's sitting there cooing at this cat like it's a newborn baby, and honestly? It was pretty adorable.

Instant best friends

*Instant best friends*

The cat seemed to think so too because it literally climbed right into her lap and started purring loud enough for half the campus to hear.

We spent like twenty minutes out there just hanging with our new friend. Carmen's already talking about bringing some cat food tomorrow "just in case we see him again." I give it two days before she's trying to convince her roommate to let her smuggle him into the dorm. Some people are just natural born cat moms, I guess.

My legs are still shaking from those lunges but honestly? Best cooldown ever.

Processing and planning

Just got off a two-hour phone call with my parents about the whole nursing thing.

Processing and planning

*Processing and planning*

They're still processing, but I can tell they're trying to be supportive even though this isn't what they pictured for me. Mom asked about twenty questions about job prospects and Dad wanted to know if I'd considered "all my options." Translation: are you sure you don't want to be a doctor?

The thing is, I am sure. More sure than I've been about anything in a long time. After watching that pediatric nurse at UNC Hospital, I know this is what I want to do. I want to be the person holding someone's hand, not just diagnosing from across the room.

Planning mode: activated.

*Planning mode: activated.*

Spent the afternoon mapping out prerequisite courses I'll need to take. Looks like I'll be adding some chemistry and anatomy classes to my schedule, but I'm actually excited about it. Carmen's been texting me study tips and telling me about her favorite professors. It's nice having someone who gets it.

My parents will come around. They always do. And even if this path takes a little longer, at least I know I'm heading in the right direction now.

Trail mix and life talks

Carmen suggested we get out of Chapel Hill for the day and I am SO glad I said yes. Falls Lake is only like 45 minutes away but it felt like we discovered this whole other world.

Trail mix and life talks

*Trail mix and life talks*

We packed some snacks and water bottles this morning and just drove until we found a trail that looked interesting. Carmen's been hiking since she was little (apparently her family does these epic camping trips every summer) and I was trying not to look like a total newbie even though my idea of outdoor exercise is usually just running around campus.

But honestly? It was perfect. We talked about everything - her nursing classes, my whole pre-med crisis situation, boys, our families, whether we're actually ready to be adults or just really good at pretending.

Trail buddies for life

*Trail buddies for life*

There's something about being out in the woods that makes everything feel less overwhelming, you know?

Plus Carmen brought this amazing homemade trail mix her mom makes with dark chocolate and dried mango. I might have to adopt this hiking thing just for the snacks.

Workout buddy status: official

Carmen and I finally synced our schedules and hit the rec center together today!

Workout buddy status: official

*Workout buddy status: official*

I've been wanting a consistent workout partner forever, and she's exactly what I needed - someone who actually pushes me instead of just gossiping between sets.

We did this killer upper body routine that left my arms feeling like jello. Carmen's been lifting way longer than me so she kept correcting my form (in the nicest way possible).

Spotting each other through the tough sets

*Spotting each other through the tough sets*

Pretty sure I would've dropped a dumbbell on my face without her spotting me through those last few reps.

The best part? She's just as competitive as I am. We're already planning our next session for Thursday, and she wants to teach me some of the exercises they do in her nursing program's fitness requirements. Finally found someone who gets that working out isn't just about looking good - it's about feeling strong and capable.

My shoulders are definitely going to hate me tomorrow, but it's so worth it to have found my workout match!

Morning after clarity

Nothing like waking up in yesterday's jeans to make you think about your life choices.

Morning after clarity

*Morning after clarity*

Last night started innocent enough - Carmen and I were supposed to grab dinner and maybe hit one party. Three parties and way too many red Solo cups later, I'm pretty sure I told half of Sigma Chi that I'm switching to nursing and the other half that I might join intramurals.

The weird thing is, I meant it all. Even through the haze of cheap beer and terrible music, something felt right about saying those things out loud. Like I was finally admitting stuff I'd been thinking but too scared to own up to.

Processing last night through pen and paper

*Processing last night through pen and paper*

Spent an hour this morning just writing it all down, trying to sort through what was the alcohol talking and what was actually me.

Turns out drunk Elena might be more honest than sober Elena sometimes. Which is either really insightful or really concerning. Probably both. Either way, I think it's time to have that conversation with my parents about changing majors. Just maybe not while I'm still wearing last night's mascara.

Carmen texted this morning asking if I remember giving her roommate dating advice for twenty minutes. I do not. But apparently I was very passionate about it.

Death by flashcards

Seventeen hours straight of studying and I'm pretty sure I can name every bone in the human body but I've forgotten how to form complete sentences.

Death by flashcards

*Death by flashcards*

My desk looks like a hurricane hit a Barnes & Noble.

I've consumed roughly my body weight in coffee today and discovered that you can actually overdose on highlighter fumes. Who knew? The girl next door keeps playing the same Kelly Clarkson song on repeat and honestly at this point it's become my study soundtrack.

Current mood: dramatically dead

*Current mood: dramatically dead*

This is me accepting defeat and surrendering to the textbook gods. If I fail this anatomy exam on Monday, just know that I tried my best and my brain officially melted somewhere around the cardiovascular system.

Time to rally for one final push tonight. Or maybe just order pizza and cry into my pillow. We'll see how I'm feeling in an hour.

Following my gut (finally)

Three hours at UNC Hospital today and I think I've figured something out.

Following my gut (finally)

*Following my gut (finally)*

Remember how I've been questioning the whole pre-med thing? Well, I actually did something about it instead of just freaking out in my dorm room. Called the hospital yesterday and asked if I could shadow some nurses today - turns out they have a whole informal program for students considering healthcare careers. Who knew?

Wandering the halls with my little notebook

*Wandering the halls with my little notebook*

The charge nurse on the cardiac unit, Sarah, let me follow her around for most of the afternoon. I'm not gonna lie, it was intense - watching her coordinate care for twelve patients, teaching a new grad how to start an IV, comforting this elderly man who was scared about his procedure. But here's the thing: she looked... satisfied? Like genuinely fulfilled by what she was doing. Not stressed (okay, maybe a little stressed), but purposeful.

I keep thinking about what she said: 'Doctors diagnose and prescribe, but nurses heal.' Maybe that sounds cheesy, but after watching her work today, I think I get it. She knew every patient's story, remembered that Mrs. Chen likes her blanket folded a certain way, noticed when Mr. Rodriguez seemed more confused than usual. That's the kind of healthcare provider I want to be. Now I just need to figure out if UNC's nursing program is as impossible to get into as everyone says it is.
