The Paragraph That Beat Me

Elena

It is June. It is summer. I am inside.

There's a textbook open on my desk that I've been technically looking at for about two hours. In that time I have: highlighted three sentences, uncapped and recapped the same highlighter at least a dozen times, refilled my water glass once, and stared at the ceiling long enough to notice there's a small water stain up there I genuinely never registered before. Productive. Very productive.

The thing is, I don't even have a hard deadline on this. It's more of a self-imposed 'before I leave, I want to finish this' situation, one of those items from the right column that doesn't have a checkbox. You can't check off 'feel ready.' You can't check off 'know enough.' You just sort of sit there with the textbook until either the information gets in or you admit defeat and go to bed. Tonight feels like it's trending toward the second option.

I did do the ceiling-stare thing. I always do the ceiling-stare thing. There's something about fully committing to the break, like, all the way back in the chair, both hands off the desk, eyes straight up, that resets something. Or at least it makes me feel like I earned the next twenty minutes of trying.

ceiling check. mandatory. non-negotiable.

The paragraph is still there. It will probably still be there tomorrow. I will fight it again then.
