A Tuesday That Asked Nothing of Me
It's just past eight and I have nowhere to be. That sentence felt strange to type. Not bad-strange, just unfamiliar. The last few weeks have been a steady accumulation of things that needed doing: the creative writing prompt that turned into something else entirely, the run I didn't mean to time but did anyway, the blog draft I keep opening and not finishing. Tonight, somehow, the list just... stopped. I made tea. I sat down. I didn't open the laptop for almost an hour.
I've been thinking a lot lately about the difference between quiet and empty. Empty is when you want to be doing something and you're not. Quiet is when the nothing actually feels like enough.
the mug. the sweater. the silence.
Tonight was quiet. I didn't figure anything out. I didn't work on the paragraph I've been circling for two weeks. I just held the mug and watched the lamp do its thing and let my brain idle, which is apparently something I need a Tuesday night in early October to remember how to do.
One small thing: I ran again last night. I wasn't going to say anything about it here, running has always been its own private category, not blog material, but it felt dishonest not to mention it after everything else I've been writing about honesty lately. Four miles, roughly. I didn't care about the pace. I cared about the number afterward, the way I always do, but only for a minute, and then I just walked home in the dark and thought about nothing specific. It's been the best part of my week more often than not, and I think that's worth a sentence, even if the sentence is all it gets.
