Two Documents Walk Into a Living Room

Elena

Here's something that happened this week that I can't stop thinking about. I came home from creative writing class with a paragraph I'd written during an in-class prompt, 'write what you already know how to say', and I sat down and put it next to a draft I've had saved on my computer since August, the one I've been calling 'not for the blog' in my head. And then I just... looked at them.

They're almost the same thing. Same rhythm. Same instinct for where to land a sentence. Same weird sideways way of getting at something without quite saying it directly. The class paragraph is about a Tuesday morning and a cup of coffee going cold. The draft is about the blog and what it's turning into. They are, structurally and spiritually, the same document. I laughed out loud in my living room at nine-thirty on a Wednesday, which felt appropriate.

reading it back. and back. and back.

reading it back. and back. and back.

I wrote 'not for the blog' at the top of that draft the way you'd write a little warning to yourself. Do not open. Handle with care. But the thing about writing something down is that it's already out, it's already been said, even if only to a text file on a laptop. And I think I've been treating the gap between what I write privately and what I post here like it's bigger than it actually is. Like there are two Elenas producing two different kinds of writing and never the twain shall meet. This week kind of blew that up.

I don't have a tidy conclusion. I'm still sitting with both pages on the coffee table, Diet Coke warm beside them, figuring out what it means that my in-class instinct and my private draft voice are the same voice. Maybe that's the assignment. Maybe that's been the assignment all along and I just finally turned in the first draft of figuring it out.
