Miles, Mood, and What the Notebook Knows
Three point two miles. Legs heavy. Mood: complicated.
That's what I wrote in the log last Tuesday. I'd only started keeping it a few weeks ago, just a small spiral notebook I grabbed from the kitchen drawer, nothing special, the kind with the marbled cover. The idea was simple: date, distance, how my legs felt. No app, no GPS tracker, just handwriting. I'd been running alone since the club fell apart and I wanted some proof that I was actually doing it, some accountability that wasn't tied to anyone else's schedule.
But here's the thing I didn't plan for. When you write 'legs heavy,' you almost always end up writing why. And 'why' is rarely about your legs. Last week's entry started as a mileage note and ended with two sentences about that creative writing class I finished, the way finishing something you started on a whim leaves this strange, echoey feeling, like a room after everyone leaves a party. I looked at what I'd written and thought: I did not mean to put that in here. This is supposed to be about running.
The run log that became something else, April 2011
I've been filling in a full week's worth of entries now, and I can see the pattern. The miles are almost secondary. What's actually in there is a record of what April has felt like from the inside, the days I went out because I needed to get out of my own head, the one morning I turned around after half a mile because I just wasn't in it, the run where I felt genuinely good for the first time in a while and the entry just says '4 miles. Fine. Actually fine.' I don't know what to do with that. I think I might just keep going and see what the log knows by the end of the month.
3.2 miles, legs heavy, mood: somewhere else entirely
