The Number I Wrote Down in July

Elena

September fifteenth.

I did the thing I wrote down that I wanted to do, not the big thing, just the small one. I tracked the grocery spending for the month. Not obsessively, not with an app, just in the way I've been doing since August: one column on a piece of paper, ballpark figures, amounts that help me know where I am without making me feel like I'm being audited. The number I wrote down in July, the rough monthly comfort number, the one I pulled from three months of receipts and a lot of rounding, it held. I came in under it by nineteen dollars. Nineteen dollars is not a triumph. But nineteen dollars is also not a failure, and there was a time not that long ago when I wouldn't have known either way.

What helped, this month specifically, was the Sunday thing. I've been half-doing it for a while, cooking something in a pot on Sunday afternoon so there's something to eat before work on Monday, but this month I actually committed to it. A big batch of pasta e fagioli on the eighth, enough for four days. Rice and roasted vegetables the week before. It sounds extremely boring and it was exactly as boring as it sounds, and it worked. The secret is that it's not really about the food. It's about not standing in front of the open refrigerator at ten o'clock on a Tuesday deciding that takeout is a reasonable emotional choice. The pot on the stove is the thing that prevents the conversation with yourself.

I was standing at the counter this morning looking at the paper, the column, the final tally, and I felt something I didn't expect, which was just a kind of quiet. Not relief exactly. More like: oh, that worked. The same way you feel when you find your keys in the second place you looked instead of the fifth. Small. Real. Gerald was doing nothing in particular on the windowsill. The bowl was being its collapsed self. The light was flat and gray and very Sunday, even though it's Sunday in September now and the light is doing that thing where it stays lower for longer and everything in the apartment looks a little more like itself. I didn't take a picture because I thought it would make a good post. I took it because I wanted to remember what it felt like when the math was right.
