Flashcards vs. a Highlighter

ElenaSimone

December fifth. Simone said she had 'a couple of things to review.' I want to be precise about that. Not a study session, not a crunch, a couple of things. I brought one highlighter and a notepad I have been carrying since October because it still has some blank pages in it. That felt proportionate to a couple of things.

She had flashcards. Handwritten. Multiple stacks. She had organized them by topic with little paperclip dividers in a way that I am not going to describe further because it will only make me look worse. I uncapped my highlighter and set it on the table next to my notepad and we looked at each other for a second and I think we both understood the situation without having to name it.

The evidence. Simone's flashcards. My one highlighter. The record speaks for itself.

The coffee was good, at least. She tested herself on three rounds of cards while I read and re-read the same page of notes in a way that I can only describe as decorative. At some point she looked up and asked me a review question, a real one, formatted properly, the kind you'd get on an actual test, and I laughed, which was not the right answer. The look she gave me is the second photo. That look is the post.

She asked me a review question. I laughed. She was not laughing.

I'm going to say this was a warm-up session. A preview. I'll have the actual studying done by, I'm going to stop that sentence there. The highlighter is still uncapped on my kitchen table. Some things speak for themselves.
