The Dress That Only Comes Out When It Earns It
April twenty-fifth. There is a dress in the back of my closet that I do not wear casually. Not because it's precious, exactly, but because I made a rule about it at some point without realizing I was making a rule, the wrap dress only comes out when the occasion earns it. Simone's birthday dinner earned it.
We went to a place that felt chosen rather than defaulted to. Wooden tables, low lights, the kind of menu where the descriptions are longer than the dishes themselves. I ordered something I couldn't fully pronounce and it arrived looking like exactly what I'd hoped for, which almost never happens. I'm choosing to take this as a sign that the week I spent staring at a piece of paper and attempting something new in the kitchen has made me braver, or at least more willing to guess in public.
The menu, the frown, the moment before confidence kicks in.
I've been thinking lately about Simone's one-new-thing comment from a few weeks back, the recipe per week, the two failures she mentioned with exactly zero embarrassment. There's something in that I'm still working out. Not a resolution, not a project. Just a posture. She ordered dessert without looking at the price and then described it to me in detail on the walk to the bus stop and I thought: yes, that is correct, that is the right way to have a birthday.
End of the night. Good dinner, good company.
The dress is back in the closet. The evening was the right length. I got home and the kitchen shelf caught the last of the night light and I stood there for a second doing nothing in particular, which felt like the right ending.
