The Oven Mitt Was Fine

Elena

March twenty-ninth. Sunday. I want to be clear that I have been cooking with some regularity for long enough to have what I privately think of as a standing order, a practice, a habit, a thing I do with genuine attention. I want to be clear about this before I tell you that I spent twenty minutes this afternoon convinced the smoke detector battery was dying, only to discover that the oven mitt I had set down between tasks had drifted onto an unlit burner, and when I turned that burner on for the second step of a recipe I've made four or five times, it started to smolder in a quiet, judgmental way.

The oven mitt was fine. Slightly warm. No damage. The smoke detector beeped twice and stopped, which felt like mercy. I stood in the kitchen for a moment just looking at it, the mitt on the counter, the pot with nothing in it yet, the whole chain of events that had led to this, and then I laughed out loud in a way that was mostly for myself, because there was no one else there.

I have been thinking lately about how the world has gone quiet in ways I haven't quite found a frame for, and how a week that feels slow and slightly underwater can be punctuated by something as small as an oven mitt and a smoke detector and your own very sincere confusion. I didn't photograph the actual smoldering. I photographed the aftermath, the mitt placed back on the counter very deliberately, as if it needed to understand what it had done.

The recipe turned out fine. I finished it. I ate it at the kitchen table with Gerald trailing his vine down the shelf above the stove in that companionable way he has, and I thought: that's the whole thing, isn't it. The oven mitt survives. You finish the recipe. You write it down because otherwise it'll just be a Tuesday that disappeared.
