The Instruction Sheet Is Now Face-Down
April seventh. At some point in the last hour, Simone and I stopped consulting the diagram and started just agreeing that what we'd made looked intentional. That is where we are with the macramé.
It was Simone's find, a kit she'd spotted at the shop two blocks from the community center, the kind of thing that says 'beginner' on the label with genuine confidence. We picked a Wednesday after yoga, which felt right: already in the mode of paying attention to something with your hands and not expecting to be good at it. I cleared the kitchen table. Gerald watched from the shelf, unbothered. The instruction sheet had eight steps. We got through four of them before the cord developed opinions of its own.
There's a single finished row of square knots that actually looks like the picture. Simone held it up to the window light to confirm, the way you hold a negative up to check the exposure.
holding it up to the light as if that would clarify anything
Everything below that row is what I would describe as 'exploratory.' We're calling the afternoon a success anyway, because the alternative is calling it a failure, and the cord is not going to hear that from us.
I've been in a quiet stretch since the Carol post, the kind of stillness that follows having finally said a thing, when the apartment feels a little more settled than usual and you notice the afternoon light differently. This helped. Not because it filled anything in, but because it was just sufficiently ridiculous. The instruction sheet is face-down on the table.

The pothos has a new leaf. We have half a wall hanging and strong opinions about the square knot. Good enough.
