The Three-Day Sentence

ElenaSimone

January fifth. The Tuesday session ended the way they always end, shoes swapped, chalk dusted off hands, a few minutes on the bench where neither of us is quite ready to reenter the world yet. And then Simone said something.

I'm not going to tell you exactly what she said, because it wasn't mine to begin with and some things have a different weight when you write them down. But it was one sentence. It was about someone she has noticed, not a declaration, not even close, just a noticing named out loud at the end of a Tuesday, which is its own specific kind of courage if you think about it. She finished tying her shoe and that was that.

I thought about it on the walk home. I thought about it the next morning when I was moving around the cord on the windowsill. I thought about it this morning, which is three days later, which is why I'm writing it down now. There is something about watching a person you know well say a thing quietly, not performing it, not asking for a response, that makes the thing feel very real.

We stood outside in the cold for a few extra minutes, the way we always do, the gym light coming through the door behind us and neither of us particularly hurrying. She said goodnight and I said goodnight and I walked home and the sentence came with me. That's the whole post. I don't have a conclusion. I just wanted to name that it happened, because Simone is always the one who names things first, and this time she named something for herself, and I got to be standing right there when she did.
