The Notes Page Was Optimistic

ElenaSimone

July eighth.

The break room has a south-facing window that does this thing in the middle of the day where the light lands exactly on the table surface and makes everything look more productive than it is. We had a plan. Paperback, notepad, the microwave clock as a timer. Simone had even written a small heading at the top of her page. I know because I saw it before she turned it face-down, which I chose not to comment on.

I think we lasted about twelve minutes before the conversation went somewhere else. Not off-topic, exactly, more like the topic changed shape without asking permission. That happens with Simone. The thing you intended to discuss turns out to be a door to a different room, and by the time you notice you've walked through it, the original room seems less important than you'd thought.

The exact moment the study session became a different kind of conversation.

I looked at my notepad at the end. Three lines. Two of them were a quote I wrote down because it sounded useful and then immediately forgot the context for. The third was a small drawing of the window. I don't know when I drew it. That felt about right.

The timer photo was her idea. I want to be accurate about that. We propped it on the counter ledge and set it and then sat back down and looked at each other and both laughed before it even went off.

Zero notes. Good conversation. Unclear if these are related.

Some things you set up to document a version of events that you already know isn't going to happen, and then you keep the picture anyway because the gap between what you planned and what actually occurred turns out to be the more honest record.
