The Conversation I Wasn't Supposed to Hear

Elena

October fourth. I was not planning to stay. The original plan was to pick up a coffee and walk home, the October air has that quality lately where walking feels like the right answer to most things, which I have been taking advantage of since I walked the old route again last week and apparently cannot stop thinking about movement as a form of thinking. But I sat down. I was too tired to do anything else, and the window seat was open, and I sat.

The two people two tables back were already mid-conversation when I arrived.

I do not know their names or their relationship, something between friends and something more loaded than friends, the way two people can occupy both categories at once without either label fitting right. They were disagreeing about something specific. Not the vague-disagreement kind, but the committed kind, where each person has already decided what they think and is now performing clarity for the other one. I was not trying to listen. I was staring at the street and nursing the coffee and being tired at the window, and the conversation just, arrived.

What I kept thinking about afterward, walking home, was not what they were disagreeing about. It was the way one of them kept saying the same sentence twice, once quietly and once louder, as if volume was the missing variable. Like if they said it at the right decibel the other person would finally understand that they were right.

I do that. I have definitely done that. I do not know if I still do it or if I just did it when I was younger and have replaced it with some other version of the same impulse, but I recognized it immediately and then sat with that recognition for the rest of the walk home.

The budget sheet is still on the kitchen table. Gerald has a new leaf coming in, I can see the curl of it from the window seat in the morning. I am trying to remember to eat actual dinners and not just late-afternoon snacks that I have convinced myself count. The overheard conversation is in the draft folder. That is where it belongs, probably, not a post, just a note to myself that sometimes the most useful thing a stranger can do is accidentally show you something you recognize.
