November fourth. The phone told me the migration was complete and I just sat there. Both phones on the table. The new one lit up and bright. The old one doing whatever old phones do when they've been replaced, just lying there, slightly warm, very quiet. I had been putting this off for two months, which is roughly how long it takes me to stop finding excuses and actually do the thing that takes forty-five minutes and requires nothing from me except patience.

The process itself is fine. Everything moves across, the photographs, the contacts, the notes app that has seventeen half-sentences I will never do anything with. The cord shadow photograph from March. The draft-folder sentences about the botanical bundle. Gerald gets a new home screen, not that he cares. What no one tells you is that when it's done you have to decide what to do with the old one, and that question is somehow heavier than the migration itself. It's just a phone. I've had it for a few years. It has a cracked corner on the case from a Tuesday climbing session in 2023.

I stood at the windowsill for a while after. The arrangement doesn't have opinions about phone upgrades. The cord was doing what it always does in early November light, casting that long thin shadow toward the letterpress card. Carol's small object. The two photographs. The named gap. None of it updated automatically. None of it needed to. The old phone is in the kitchen drawer now, which is not a decision, exactly, but it's where it ended up. I'll figure that out later. The new one is very fast and I already don't notice.
