The Light Shifted About a Week Ago

Elena

Mid-September and the kitchen light is doing something it wasn't doing in August. Lower angle, cooler at the edges, the kind of shift you don't notice arriving and then can't stop noticing once it's there. I've been stopping in the middle of things, kettle on, mug in hand, nothing urgent, just to look at it.

The windowsill caught it this morning in a way that made me stay longer than I planned. The cord's shadow was doing the thing it does in October, except it's only September, which either means the year is moving faster than I'm tracking or the cord is getting ahead of itself. Carol's small object had a line of light across it that I don't remember seeing in the summer. The collapsed bowl on the shelf above the stove was lit from the side in a way that made it look like it had something to say. I didn't photograph any of it specifically. I just stood there.

The arrangement in September light.

The arrangement in September light.

I've been thinking lately about how many things in the apartment I've stopped arguing with. The prints are still leaning against the wall, that question closed without ceremony a few weeks ago, and the cord is still the only making I'm in the middle of, and the kitchen has become the room where most of the accumulation lives without any of it feeling crowded. September light is good at making that visible. The way it comes in lower, more specifically. It points at things.

Forty minutes before I needed to leave this morning. Didn't run, didn't sketch, didn't open anything on my phone. Just stood with the mug and watched the kitchen be itself in September. I don't have a better reason than that.
