The Bag Had Other Plans

Elena

The paper grocery bag held on through self-checkout, through the walk to the bus stop, through the entire ride home, through the front door, and then, at the precise moment I set it on the kitchen floor to take off my boots, it simply gave up. Not dramatically. Not all at once. It just exhaled.

One orange rolled immediately under the leaning prints. The pasta box tilted. A container of yogurt stayed put, which felt like a personal slight aimed at everything else that didn't. I stood there in one boot for a moment, genuinely unsure whether to laugh or just sit down on the floor with the bag. I chose to crouch and take a photo, which is probably the same thing.

The evidence.

The evidence.

The bag is now flat in the recycling. The orange made it back to the fruit bowl. The prints are still leaning where they've been leaning. Everything approximately where it was before, except now I have photographic documentation of the exact moment a Tuesday afternoon decided to have an opinion.

Post-incident review.

Post-incident review.

Fall is doing the thing where the light is lower and longer and the kitchen feels smaller in a way I actually like, and it turns out the most interesting thing that happened today was a paper bag. I'm fine with that. Thursdays, sorry, Tuesdays, don't make promises, and apparently neither do grocery bags.
