The Mat Knows More Than You Do

ElenaSimone

Forty-five minutes. That is how long it took for the community center mat room to teach me something I genuinely did not know about myself, which is that I have a completely irrational confidence in my ability to land correctly. I do not have this ability. The mat was aware of this before I was.

Simone is the one who found the class, a single-session judo intro, listed in the fall brochure between a watercolor workshop and something called Gentle Stretch for Everybody. She sent the screenshot on a Tuesday after climbing, which felt appropriate, and said nothing else. No 'we should.' Just the screenshot. I have started to notice she does this: names the thing and then leaves it in the air, not attached to anything. I registered before the week was out.

The class was nine people in socks on a blue crash mat, taught by someone who was very patient in the specific way people are patient when they have watched this exact scene many times before. The move we were learning, a basic breakfall, the controlled sideways drop, is not complicated in theory. In practice, every part of my body had a separate opinion about it, and none of them agreed with the instructor. Simone got the arm-slap timing on maybe her fourth try. I was still negotiating with my shoulder on the seventh. She did not say anything about this. She just stood nearby and talked herself through her own next attempt in a low voice, which I found both impressive and slightly annoying.

We sat on the mat edge afterward, shoes still off, and neither of us said much for a minute. My hip flexors had started their complaint. Simone said 'the floor was not on my side,' and I said I thought the floor was neutral, and she said that was exactly the kind of thing someone says who has not made peace with the floor yet. She's not wrong. I don't think I'm going back. I don't think that's the point. The mat room did something and I don't need to name what it was yet.
