The Particular Feeling of a Finish
January was the registration. I remember it being a four-minute decision, browser tab, payment page, tab closed. The kind of decision that doesn't announce itself as significant, which is probably why it sticks. I wrote about it in two sentences in the draft folder and then didn't write about it again for months, because starting a thing and finishing a thing are different posts, and I wasn't ready to know which one this would be yet.
Today was the last session. I walked out the front door of the community center at quarter past four and stood on the step for a minute because I didn't know where my feet were going yet. October light this afternoon was doing that specific thing it does in the first real cold week, low, almost horizontal, amber enough to make even a parking lot look considered. I took one photograph of myself standing there. Not for content. Just to mark it. The way you put a hand on a doorframe when you're leaving a place you lived in.
mid-step, which is maybe the most honest moment
Something I keep not saying about this: I started it in January because there was a version of myself I'd been thinking about for about three years without doing anything about. The course was adjacent to that version. Not the whole thing, but adjacent. Finishing it doesn't make me that version yet. It just means the gap between where I was standing and where that version is standing got a little shorter without my having to make a whole announcement about it. I'll take that. I'll take the four-minute decision that turned into a nine-month one and the October light on the front step and the specific feeling, almost like recognition, that came on the walk home.
the paper version of something you can't quite explain yet
The draft folder has had 'say something about the course' in it since March. It kept not being ready. Turns out it was waiting for a finish to have anything to say.
