The Ceiling Had Other Plans

Mid-sentence. That's when it happened. We were in the stairwell, I was heading toward the Wednesday yoga bulletin board to check the November schedule, Simone was wrapping up a Tuesday session and coming down from the upper floor, and directly between us, without any particular warning, a drop ceiling tile let go. Not dramatically. Not with a crash. Just a soft, definitive thud on the linoleum, and then the two of us standing on either side of it in complete silence for what felt like a medically significant amount of time.

I want to be clear that neither of us moved. I don't know what I was waiting for. Simone looked at the tile, looked up at the hole it left, looked at me, and said, with the tone of someone reviewing a mildly disappointing quarterly report: 'That's been thinking about doing that for a while.' Which is the most accurate thing anyone has said in this building in years, probably. I have walked past that section of ceiling every Wednesday for I don't know how long. It had the look of something that was just deciding.

We flagged someone at the front desk on the way out. They seemed unsurprised, which is its own kind of information. Simone took the long way around for the rest of the building and I can't say I blame her. There is something genuinely funny about both of us standing there like we were waiting to be introduced to the tile, and also something that is just the texture of a Sunday in a building that has held a lot of people's ordinary Sundays for a long time. The ceiling earned it, honestly.

The November schedule, for the record, is unchanged. Yoga is still Wednesday. The stairwell is cordoned off with a folding sign that says WET FLOOR even though the floor is not wet, which is the kind of institutional shorthand I find weirdly comforting. Everything is fine. The tile is fine. We are fine.
