The Pause Was the Thing

Elena

Three episodes in and I hit pause not because anything was wrong but because something was exactly right. That specific moment where a show does something so precise, a look, a half-sentence, a door that doesn't open, and you need thirty seconds to just sit in it before you let the next thing happen. I've been watching a lot this fall. October does that to me. The evenings get dark early and the apartment gets cozy in a way that feels earned after the summer, and suddenly the couch is a complete destination.

I won't name the show because naming it would require me to explain it and explaining it would ruin what I just said about the pause. I'll say it's the kind of writing where you're three episodes in and you've made no reliable judgments about anyone. Which is uncomfortable in the way that good things are uncomfortable, the way the second print was less careful and better for it, the way the cord ended up on the windowsill because I just kept working around it. You accommodate the uncertainty and eventually it's yours.

Got up for tea during the pause. Stood in the kitchen doorway. Looked at the windowsill for a while. Gerald has a new leaf coming in on the trailing vine side, which I noticed and then forgot to mention and am now mentioning here, briefly, as the kind of detail October deserves. Made the tea. Went back. Hit play.

The mug is still on the side table. The show is still not resolved. Both of these feel correct.
