What I Did With May
There's a bowl in my sink right now that had cereal in it approximately forty-five minutes ago. That was dinner. I'm telling you this upfront so we're calibrated.
I planted zinnia seedlings last weekend for Mother's Day, not to give to anyone, just because my mom always had them in the yard and I wanted something alive on the window ledge. They're coming up. Not dramatically, not fast, just these tiny determined green things pushing through the soil in their little cups, which I think is the correct energy for late May. I keep checking on them more than is strictly necessary. I have rearranged them twice so each one gets equal light from the window. I am not going to examine that too closely.

This month kind of slipped by in a way that months do when nothing enormous happens but a lot of small things do. Shifts at the store, a writing thing I'm sitting with, the cereal dinners, the seedlings. I went for a run this morning, the usual route, early, before the park got busy, and came home and made coffee and didn't write about the run, which felt fine. That's probably the most normal sentence I've typed in a while.
Happy belated Memorial Day weekend to everyone. I hope yours involved at least one thing that wasn't on a to-do list.
