The Brochure I Picked Up Just to Look At
November already. I don't know when that happened.
The community center brochure has been sitting on my kitchen counter since sometime last week, I grabbed it when I was in there dropping off a bill payment, stuffed it in my bag without really thinking, and then just left it there next to the fruit bowl for five days. Tonight I finally picked it up. I made tea, sat down on the floor because the couch felt too formal for this kind of aimless browsing, and I read the whole thing. Beginner ceramics. A watercolor intro class. Something called 'Fiber Arts for Beginners' that I had to read twice because I wasn't sure what fiber arts were. (It's basically yarn. Knitting and weaving and that kind of thing, I think.) I circled nothing. I dog-eared nothing. I just read it the way you read a menu at a restaurant you're not sure you'll go to yet.
I've been thinking, ever since I wrote that little nothing-post a couple weeks ago, about the fact that I haven't actually made anything in a while. Not baked, not crafted, not even doodled in a margin. And I can't tell if I'm looking for a class because I genuinely want structure, or because without a signup form I'll just keep having the itch and never scratch it. Both, probably.
really just browsing, though.
Nothing decided. I put the brochure on the coffee table instead of back in the kitchen, which feels like progress of some kind. Gerald is on the windowsill, putting out what I'm pretty sure is a third new leaf this month, completely unbothered by my indecision. Good for him.
Gerald witnessed the whole thing and said nothing.
