Already the Same Room

Elena

January twenty-seventh.

It was Wednesday. I was unrolling my mat, the same mat, the same corner of the room I always take because the radiator is warmer on that side and I am not above that, and she laughed at something the instructor said. And I knew that laugh.

I had been sitting with the commenter question since Christmas morning. Not obsessively. But the way you sit with something you haven't filed yet. The username was neutral, the comment was specific, and the detail that narrowed it, the thing they'd said in their reply that felt like it could only come from someone who knew what the community center smelled like in winter, that particular combination of old wood floor and industrial heat, I'd turned it over probably a dozen times without letting myself land anywhere. And then she laughed and I landed.

We have been in the same Wednesday class since October. We have nodded at each other over foam blocks. I know her name because the instructor uses it for adjustments. She knows the blog well enough to have found a post from 2009 and left a comment that was, genuinely, one of the more thoughtful things anyone has said about something I wrote. We have been in the same room for months and I did not know we were also in the same other room.

I didn't say anything to her. I'm not sure I will. There's a version of this where I say something and it's fine, and there's a version where saying it changes the particular quality of Wednesday evenings in a way I'd rather not risk. What I wanted to write down was just the specific texture of the moment of recognition, not the reveal, not the conversation, just the instant before, where everything you thought you knew about who is watching quietly rearranges itself and the room you're already standing in becomes two rooms at once. That's the thing I wanted to keep.
