The Geo gra phy I Already Had

ElenaSimone

Dec ember tenth. T he photograph was already on my camera. That is the part I keep coming back to.

I had taken it in October, a single block of storefront s two stops east, late afternoon, the dry cleaner's window with that specific blue awning. I had written about it, scrolled back to it probably every other day since, and still not entirely understood why it had the pull that it did. And then Simone, at the end of a shift sometime in November, said she knew that block. Grew up two streets over. Said it the way you say something that is simply true, not as an offering, not as a dramatic reveal, just as a fact that happened to surface.

I didn't write about it right away. I wasn't sure what I was writing around. But I showed her the photographs a few days later, pulled up the camera on the counter, scrolled to that block, and watched her lean in. She stopped on one frame. The same one I had been coming back to. She didn't say anything for a second and then she said the name of the cross street and I already knew it by then, from looking at the image so many times, but hearing it from her was a different kind of knowing.

The friendship didn't change. That's the thing. It didn't need a ceremony or a declared new chapter. It just, expanded. Like there was a room in it I hadn't seen yet, and she walked me there without meaning to. The camera had already been to the neighborhood before I knew Simone had a history in it, and somehow that feels like the thing. Not that I found it. That I had already been.
