The Thing the Room Is Waiting For
August twenty-sixth.
I've been standing in my apartment at odd moments, between coming home and putting my bag down, between boiling water and the kettle going off, and noticing that something is missing. Not missing like something fell off a shelf. More like a held breath. The room is exactly what it was six months ago and that's fine, that's good, except that my eye keeps drifting to the windowsill and then past it to the corner by the radiator and then back, like it's waiting for me to finish a sentence I haven't started.
The windowsill is full, technically. Five objects that have each arrived with a whole story behind them, the collapsed bowl from the first pottery class, the letterpress card from the Saturday workshop, the two photographs Carol sent, and the small thing she tucked into the last envelope. They're arranged without arrangement, just where they landed and stayed, and they are right. They are completely right. And yet. To the right of the last object there is about eight inches of sill that has been empty for as long as I can remember, and I don't think it's asking for anything specific, but it is asking.
The windowsill, five objects, and the space to the right of all of them.
I don't know yet if it's a plant or an object from somewhere secondhand or just a small rearrangement of what's already there. I'm not going to manufacture a decision. I've been doing this long enough to know that the noticing is the first real step, not the shopping, not the deliberate seeking, just the moment when the room stops feeling finished and starts feeling like a question. The trail post took three days to write after the hike. I imagine this one will take longer. The apartment is patient. I'm going to let it wait.
In the meantime: the August light on those five objects just before six in the evening is genuinely extraordinary, and I keep almost posting the photograph of the windowsill and then not posting it, which seems like a very on-brand way to handle something I haven't resolved yet.
Eye level with the windowsill. Trying to figure out what it's asking for.
