The Date, The Cost, The Tab I Already Had Open
January sixteenth. I want to tell you something about the way I do things, which is that I almost never do them out loud. The outdoor skills session, the winter version, shorter, one outdoor hour, Simone mentioned it after Tuesday's climbing session the way she mentions things, almost accidentally, I registered the information the way I register everything: without saying so aloud, without telling Simone I was already leaning toward it before she finished the sentence.
That evening I came home, made tea, opened my laptop to look something else up entirely, and then, not quite on purpose, or maybe exactly on purpose, I had the community center's registration page open in a second tab. Date: late February. Cost: just under the paper number, which I keep updated now, which I have kept updated since 2011, which continues to function as a quiet permission slip rather than a barrier. I sat there for a minute with my chin in my hand. The snow was doing something soft and indecisive against the window. I read the description twice even though I had already read it twice on the gear shop bulletin board the first time Simone mentioned a winter variant back in November.
I registered.
After the click.
Not with any ceremony. Not even with a particular feeling, except the one I always get when I've done the thing I was going to do anyway, a small, slightly embarrassed relief, like my body had been holding its breath and didn't mention it. I thought about texting Simone. I did not text Simone. I will tell her at Tuesday's session, the same way she told me: almost accidentally, at the end of something else.
The part where the hands know before the brain does.
The sketchbook is still on the shelf. Gerald is in his new pot. The windowsill gap is still open. Some things move slowly and some things, apparently, happen in four minutes on a Tuesday night with a mug of tea going cold at my elbow. The paper number does its work. It doesn't announce it.
