The Thing I'd Been Answering Without Thinking

ElenaSimone

September fifteenth. The notebook came out because the laptop felt too formal for what I was trying to do.

Simone was still here. That part wasn't planned, we'd been at the table since around seven, and at some point the conversation stopped being about whether I was going to apply for anything and started being about something quieter, which is: when did I stop noticing what I actually wanted? Not a dramatic question. Not an accusation. Just the thing that surfaces when someone who knows you well sits across from you long enough.

I wrote three lines and stopped. Read them back. Wrote two more. The thing I kept circling was that I'd been answering questions about work, good ones, honest ones, the kind Simone asks, and I'd been answering them correctly in the sense that nothing I said was false, but incorrectly in the sense that I wasn't the one saying them. Some earlier version of me had worked out a set of acceptable responses, and I'd been running those. Which is fine, probably. Until someone sits across from you and waits.

The look right before you say the thing you didn't know you thought.

The look right before you say the thing you didn't know you thought.

The lead position still isn't the point. It might be the occasion, but it's not the point. The point is that I heard myself answer Simone's question last Tuesday before I'd decided to answer it, and what came out had a texture I didn't recognize as my own autopilot. Something more like an actual preference. I wrote that down. I looked at it for a while. I'm leaving it here because I think it's true, and I think I've been waiting a while to find out what was under the automatic version.

Simone set the self-timer before she left. Same instinct as last time, ironic proof of productivity. I found the frames on the memory card a few days later and I'm using them here because they look like exactly what it was: two people at a kitchen table, one of them finally writing toward the actual thing.
