The Thing Carol Said in Passing

Elena

August eleventh.

Carol's postcard has been sitting on the kitchen counter for a little over two weeks. I haven't moved it to the windowsill. I haven't replied. I haven't even turned it face-down, which is sometimes what I do with things I'm not ready to think about. It's just there, between Gerald's pot and the stack of paper I keep meaning to sort, and every time I make coffee I look at it.

The two sentences on it are ordinary, warm, brief, exactly her register. But one of them mentioned, in that offhand way she has, that she's been trying to learn something new herself this year. That was it. No elaboration. She said it the way you'd mention that you changed shampoo. And I have not stopped turning it over.

Not at the postcard. Just, elsewhere.

Not at the postcard. Just, elsewhere.

I don't know what she's learning. I don't know if she means it the way I mean it when I sign up for a six-week class or whether she means something quieter, a language app, a recipe she keeps making wrong, a habit of noticing. I don't know if she's good at it yet, or if being good at it is the point at all. I realized this week that the not-knowing is exactly what I'm interested in, which is a strange thing to discover about yourself while standing at a kitchen counter at seven in the morning holding a mug that's already gone lukewarm.

I'm not writing to her yet. I just wanted to put the curiosity somewhere before it dissolved into the general noise of August. It's here. It's real. That's probably enough for now.
