Before You Know That You're Known

ElenaSimone

October twenty-fourth. There is a particular kind of information that arrives slightly late, not late the way a text sits unread, but late the way a question about you reaches you only after it has already been asked of someone else. You don't hear the asking. You hear the echo.

I have been thinking about that lag. The gap between the moment a fact about you exists in the world and the moment you learn it exists. It isn't a bad feeling, exactly. It isn't even really a surprise, if you think about it, most of what other people know about you got there without your supervision. But there is something specific about learning that a question was asked, rather than answered. It means someone was curious before you were ready to be curious back. That's the part that has a texture.

Simone was here this afternoon. We didn't talk about it, I'm not sure I could have explained it yet. She made tea, I sat with the notebook, Gerald's vine did what it does in October light. The shelf held everything it usually holds. I kept thinking about the word 'known' and how it implies completion, like a thing that's been finished and filed. What I mean is something more like: you are already partway into a room someone else built a mental image of, and you are only now getting the invitation.

The sketchbook is back under the mail pile. The notebook has three legible sentences and several that aren't. That's about where we are.
