The Cord Was Still in There

Elena

June first. I opened the sketchbook to look something up, I want to say it was to check when I drew the windowsill gap, which would be a very me reason to go looking in a sketchbook, and the cord was just sitting there. The single row of square knots from the April afternoon with Simone, still coiled between the pages where I tucked it as a bookmark without thinking about it. I stood at the kitchen table for longer than made sense.

I didn't do anything with it. I looked up what I was looking for, or maybe I forgot what I was looking for, and I left the cord where it was. Closed the sketchbook over it. Put the sketchbook back on the table where it usually sits. The whole thing took about four minutes and also slightly rearranged something I don't have a word for yet. That's not a complaint. That's just what it was.

Gerald has a new vine reaching toward the shelf. The afternoon light was coming in at the angle it gets in early June, the one that makes the kitchen look like it's being paid attention to. The collapsed bowl was catching it up on the shelf. I didn't photograph any of that. I photographed the cord on the open page and then I sat down and looked at it for a while and then I closed the sketchbook and that was the afternoon.

closed. cord on top. still thinking.

closed. cord on top. still thinking.
