What the Box Became

Elena

August twenty-first. I published the post this morning before the coffee was gone, which is probably the right order of operations for something that short. It was maybe four paragraphs. Maybe three. The box, Carol's box, the one that arrived in late 2021 and held things for about a year and a half before they each found somewhere to be, has been folded flat on the kitchen shelf since May. I noticed it again last week while I was reaching past Gerald for the good mug, and I thought: that's the whole post. A box that finished being a box. A container that did what it came to do and then just became furniture.

I've been thinking about what it means for an object to stop being a thing and start being there. The collapsed bowl made that transition so long ago I can't remember writing it; the macramé cord found the windowsill the way objects find their place in a room that's paying attention, by being worked around long enough that one day the working-around stops.

The box is different, because the box is empty. Its whole usefulness was temporary. And somehow that makes it a cleaner version of the same lesson: it earned its place the moment it stopped being necessary.

I don't have anything else to say about it, which is probably why it took this long to post. Some things don't need a point, they just need someone to notice them before the noticing disappears into ordinary household time. The shelf above the stove now holds Gerald, the collapsed bowl, and a folded piece of cardboard that used to contain my mother's things. That sentence is the post. I figured I'd write it down here too, for the record.
