The Same Sentence, Six Weeks Later

Elena

There is a sentence in my draft folder that I wrote in September. It says something like: the prints look better unplaced than I expected. That's the whole sentence. I have opened the folder approximately six times since then, read it, closed the folder, and gone to do something else. This morning I opened it again and the sentence was still there, still accurate, and the prints were still leaning against the kitchen wall where they have been since August, and the October light was doing something to them I did not anticipate and am having trouble describing.

The light is the thing. It has been doing this for maybe two weeks, coming in at this low flat angle in the morning, raking across the wall rather than filling it, and landing on the prints in a way that makes them look considered. Not hung. Not placed. Leaning, with intention, which is not the same as having intention. The prints don't know they look good. But the light is very specific about its opinion.

Still leaning. Still fine.

Still leaning. Still fine.

I wrote once, in 2014, after the photography workshop, that my preferred direction was late-afternoon side light. I had not thought about that in a long time. It occurred to me this morning that the October light coming through the kitchen window before nine is doing the same thing from the other end of the day. Same angle, same decision to show texture rather than erase it. The prints are getting the treatment I apparently already had a name for.

The windowsill has had years to figure out what it's doing. The prints have had six weeks.

The windowsill has had years to figure out what it's doing. The prints have had six weeks.

I am not placing them. I want to say that cleanly before the draft folder turns this into something with an arc. The sentence from six weeks ago is still the only useful thing I have written about this, and I have decided to let December's inventory post absorb it, the way those posts absorb things that don't resolve on their own schedule. Or the light will change, and the question will change with it. Either way, I'm not in a hurry. The prints are fine where they are. The sentence is fine where it is. Some things just need to be accurate, not finished.
