The Light Changed and the Sentence Didn't
October 20th. The light came through the kitchen window at an angle I haven't seen since last fall, and it landed on the two prints still leaning against the wall, the ones from the framing shop in August, the ones I have not placed, the ones I keep telling myself I'll figure out, and for approximately four minutes I stood there with my coffee and understood nothing new about them.
There is a sentence in my draft folder. I wrote it in September, something about how the prints look better unplaced than I expected, which is not quite a decision but is something adjacent to one. I have not added to it. I open it occasionally, read it, close the folder. The sentence has not changed. The prints have not moved. And yet this morning the light was different enough that I thought maybe the question had shifted, even if the answer hadn't.
The windowsill has been doing its own thing, as it does in October. The cord's shadow is getting longer. The gap between the letterpress card and the second photograph has a quality in this light that it doesn't have in summer, something quieter, or more patient, I can't decide which word. All five objects and the one named absence, doing what they do. The prints are off to the side, leaning, not in the arrangement and not quite outside it either.
the light did something to them this morning. six weeks of nothing and then this.
I wrote about the not-placing in September and called it the honest answer. I still think that's right. But this morning the light made me wonder if 'honest answer' and 'final answer' are actually the same thing, or if I've been letting myself off a small hook by conflating them. The draft-folder sentence is still sitting there. Maybe December's inventory post absorbs it. Maybe the light changes enough first to make me ask a different question. Either way, the prints are staying where they are for now, and the sentence is staying where it is, and apparently that's the update.
windowsill doing its thing. prints doing theirs. kitchen holding all of it.
