Certified Mail and Other Things Nobody Explains

Elena

The post office is not complicated. I know this. I have been inside a post office before. But there is a difference between going to the post office with someone who knows what they're doing and going to the post office as the person who is supposed to know what they're doing. Those are two entirely different experiences.

I stood at the counter for what felt like a very long time trying to figure out whether I needed to fill out the little green card or the little white form or both, and the answer, it turns out, is both, but you fill out one before you hand things over and one after, and that information is apparently just assumed. The woman behind the counter was patient with me. Patient in a way that made it clear she has done this with many nineteen-year-olds before. I appreciated it.

The whole thing took maybe twenty-five minutes, which is approximately twenty minutes longer than it should have. I walked out holding my receipt like it was a diploma.

The spring air hit me and I genuinely felt proud of myself, which is embarrassing to write but also true. I have been doing a lot of small things lately that feel bigger than they are, writing down numbers, pressing submit buttons, opening notes pages I haven't filled in yet. The post office fits neatly into that category. A thing I needed to do that I kept thinking I could put off and then just didn't.

Somewhere between the counter and the parking lot I decided that the rest of the day could be easy. I'd earned it. The ledger is still sitting in my notes app. The inbox is still exactly as suspenseful as it was this morning. But I mailed the thing, I got the receipt, and I figured out the forms. One system at a time.
