Gerald Gets the Frame
July fifteenth. The framing shop printmaking night is still in the draft folder. It has been there since May. I am at peace with this. What I am not at peace with is the fact that in the same window of time I have taken approximately eleven photographs of Gerald.
This morning I noticed that the vine has grown long enough to graze the rim of the collapsed bowl on the shelf above the stove. I stood on my toes to get a frame of it. The two objects have been in this kitchen for years, the bowl since 2010 or so, the vine since the repotting in 2017, and at some point between last October and now they started sharing a surface without asking me. I photographed it before I thought about whether it was worth photographing, which is maybe the only honest way to use a camera.
the vine found the bowl. I only noticed because I was trying to photograph something else.
The thing I keep coming back to, or rather the thing I keep not coming back to, is the printmaking night at the framing shop. The draft-folder sentence says: the framing shop is a place I have only ever stood outside of. That is still true. Simone mentioned it in May without appending 'we should,' which I wrote about, and then the season moved on and the sentence sat there being a sentence. The camera on the kitchen table this morning looked very much like a question I haven't answered yet. Gerald, at least, is photogenic. Gerald does not require registration or a Thursday evening.
the camera on the table. the framing shop printmaking night: still in the draft folder.
I am going to leave the printmaking sentence in the folder for now. If August resolves it, I'll know. If it doesn't, then the not-going will become the post, same as it usually does. The vine is grazing the bowl. The cord is on the windowsill. The camera is on the table. Some mornings the kitchen is the whole story.
