What the Draft Folder Decided

ElenaSimone

July fourth. The framing shop printmaking night has been in the draft folder for seven weeks. I want to name that plainly, because the sentence has been patient enough to deserve directness.

The sentence says: Standing outside the framing shop feels like the right distance.

I wrote it in May, the evening after Simone mentioned the Thursday open night at the session wrap. I did not look up the details that night. I looked them up three days later, the third Thursday of each month, six to nine, the sign-up through the shop's own site, and I read the page twice and then closed the tab. I did not register. I told myself I was still deciding. But the draft folder has a longer memory than I do, and it has been holding this sentence since May while I did other things: the botanical dyeing arc concluded, the cord confirmed its measuring-standard status again without anyone asking it to, Gerald grew two new leaves since spring. The sentence sat.

This morning, the Fourth, the city quieter than usual, the block outside doing that particular holiday-morning thing where it feels like the neighborhood is keeping its own counsel, I opened the draft folder with some idea of writing about the summer route, or the windowsill in July light, and instead I just looked at the sentence for a while. It said the same thing it said in May. And I realized that the not-looking-up-the-registration, the not-going, had been accumulating quietly into something that was already an answer. The draft folder knew before I did. The framing shop printmaking night is a place I have, for now, only ever stood outside of, and that is, it turns out, exactly what the sentence said.

Simone will probably name this more precisely than I just did. She usually does.

The cord on the windowsill, doing its usual thing.

The cord on the windowsill, doing its usual thing.

The cord is on the windowsill in the summer light. The collapsed bowl is on the shelf above the stove. Gerald is growing. The printmaking night happens every third Thursday and I have not gone and it is July and that is a complete sentence.

Fourth of July morning. Coffee and the draft folder and no particular plan.
